A lighting designer (or LD) works with the director, chore-ographer, set designer, costume designer and sound designer to create the lighting, atmosphere, and time of day for the production in response to the text, while keeping in mind issues of visibility, safety, and cost. The LD also works closely with the stage manager or show control programming, if show control systems are used in that production. Outside of stage lighting the job of a Lighting Designer can be much more diverse and they can be found working on rock and pop tours, corporate launches, art installation and on massive celebration spectaculars, for example the Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies.

Sound design is the process of specifying, acquiring, manipulating or generating audio elements to enhance the experience of the audience. It is employed in a variety of disciplines including theatre, filmmaking, television production, sound recording and reproduction, live performance, sound art, post-production and video game software development. Sound design most commonly involves the manipulation of previously composed or recorded audio, such as sound effects and dialogue. In some instances it may also involve the composition or manipulation of audio to create a desired effect or mood.

Some sound designers specialize in certain genres of work, though typically most work across all genres. The two most common specialisms are in musical theatre, and plays; with others including devised work, children's theatre, dance and opera.

Once the lighting- or sound design has been implemented it is commonly handed over to the lighting- or sound engineer to operate it during a show.
