ART LESSONS

Arts education, classes or lessons is the area of learning that is based upon only the kind of art that one can see; drawing, sculpture, painting, and design in jewelry, pottery, weaving, fabrics, etc. and design applied to more practical fields such as commercial graphics and home furnishings. Art education may focus on students creating art, on learning to criticize or appreciate art, or some combination of the two.

Art is often taught through drawing, an empirical activity which involves seeing, interpreting and discovering appropriate marks to reproduce an observed phenomenon. An alternative approach to art education involves an emphasis on imagination, both in interpreting and creating art. Alternative approaches, such as visual culture and issue-based approaches in which students explore societal and personal issues through art, also inform art education today.

Art schools are institutions with elementary, secondary, post-secondary or undergraduate, or graduate or postgraduate programs in these areas. They are distinguished from larger institutions which also may offer majors or degrees in the visual arts.

Teaching Artists, also called artist educators, or community artists are professional artists who teach and integrate their art form, perspectives, and skills into a wide range of settings. Teaching Artists work with schools, after school programs, community agencies, prisons, jails, and social service agencies.

A teaching artist is a practicing professional artist with the complementary skills, curiosities and sensibilities of an educator, who can effectively engage a wide range of people in learning experiences in, through, and about the arts.
