ART

Art causes people to look a little closer. To look closer at the social issues, at other people and their emotions, at the environment that surround them, and the everyday objects and life forms around them. It helps them see what is there but not easily perceived. The artist brings out that which cannot be seen or felt easily. When society sees and feels clearly on these things, it provides opportunities for change in thought or appreciation of the message behind the art.

PERFORMING ARTS

Performing arts are art forms in which artists use their voices and/or the movements of their bodies, often in relation to other objects, to convey artistic expression. Performing arts include a variety of disciplines but all are intended to be performed in front of a live audience.

Theatre is the branch of performing arts; concerned with acting out stories in front of an audience, using a combination of speech, gesture, music, dance, sound and spectacle. Any one or more of these elements is performing arts. Theatre takes such forms as plays, musicals, opera, ballet, illusion, mime, classical Indian dance, improvisational theatre, stand-up comedy, pantomime, and non-conventional or contemporary forms like postmodern theatre, post-dramatic theatre, or performance art.

The Performing Arts presupposes collaborative modes of production and a collective form of reception. Performing Arts usually involves contributions from playwrights, directors, choreographers, conductors, a cast of actors, singers or dancers, and a technical production team that includes a scenic or set designer, lighting designer, costume designer, sound designer, stage manager, stage hands and production manager. Depending on the production, this team may also include a composer, video designer or fight director.

Julius Eichbaum - flamboyant businessman, publisher, cultural activist and opera-lover - (primarily known for his publication of the journal Scenaria and his sharp and critical editorials and articles on arts and culture in South Africa), once said to me that artists see themselves as more important than soap powder. And that is the problem. He argued that if a brand of soap powder is not on the shelf, nobody will buy it.
