AGENTS: What Will Happen In a Meeting with a Talent Agent?

What Will Happen In a Meeting with a Talent Agent?

Show the Agent Who You Are

An Agent has called you in for a meeting because he or she is interested in you and possibly looking to add you to their client roster.  What happens in your meeting will depend on the agency, the type of representation you’re seeking (commercial and/or theatrical), and also what level you are at in your career.  If you are just starting out, you will probably not have many “big name” credits on your resume (which, by the way, should be neatly attached to your headshot when you attend your meeting).

Be You

Regardless of whether or not you’re starting out or are a professional seeking new representation, always show the Agent exactly who you are, and be yourself in your meeting.  As is true with performance overall, don’t act:  BE!  You are unique, and your uniqueness is what is going to help you to book work as a Performing Artist.  (That’s why there IS room for everyone in the business, because everyone is different and has something unique to offer the industry!)  The goal is to show your potential Agent exactly who you are.

Do not try to pretend to be someone that you’re not.  Being yourself will give the Agent an idea of the type of person that you are.  You will be more relaxed, which will allow you to get a good “feel” for who this person is, too.  It will also help them determine which types of roles you may be right for.  This absolutely does NOT mean that you will not have the opportunity to audition for and to book work portraying many different kinds of characters.  However, until you’re at a level where you are offered every role available under the sun, you’re most-likely going to be playing roles that are (at least somewhat) similar to your type.  Embrace yourself and your type!  When you do, you will make money.

Knowing yourself inside and out is extremely important as a Performer.  It will create confidence, and in a meeting with an Agent, it will show him or her that you know what you’re doing.
