About Mayday SA

Mayday-SA is a group of volunteers offering a confidential and compassionate support network to South African aviation licence holders. These volunteers, called Peer Volunteers, provide a “First Port of Call” to colleagues in need of support; be it support after an accident, incident or operational event, or personal or life crisis.

The Peer Volunteers, aviation-trained individuals themselves, have an understanding of the unique pressures of the aviation operating environment, and “speak the language”, which helps the person in need feel understood. Surrounding the Peer Volunteer group is a carefully selected network of health professionals to whom referrals can be made should professional assistance be necessary.

Mayday-SA’s origins were born in the aftermath of the two Albatross accidents in 2011. It was recognised that there is a need for a support system for aviation professionals in the wider community that surrounds these individuals. The initiative is based on similar, very successful international programmes. The Mayday-SA programme provides support and resources to the “Peer to Peer” programme offered by the Airline Pilots’ Association of South Africa (ALPA-SA).

Mayday-SA is registered as a Section 21 Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) responsible for training and maintaining volunteers who are capable of performing this sensitive role. The funds collected are used to provide training to world-class standards, and to build a self-sustaining structure independent of any authority, and a group of volunteers who are capable of performing this extremely sensitive role and thus enhance the lives of the South African aviation professional.

It has long been recognised that timely intervention and supportive discussion can reduce the effects of trauma suffered by those involved in traumatic events. The perceptions of a traumatic event are different for each individual, and the stress experienced is the normal reaction of a normal person to an abnormal event. The services offered by the volunteers of Mayday-SA help to reduce the number of sick days taken by employees post-accident/incident, and also reduce the possibility of individuals developing post-traumatic stress disorder.
