What should I do to make our home safe for a puppy?

.

Getting ready for your puppy?

A good place to start is by putting out of reach any harmful items such as:
  • Cleaning materials, toilet fresheners, oils, etc.
  • Clothing such as stockings, socks and other small items that can be swallowed.
  • Food; Chocolate, onions, grapes, etc. plus be careful not to leave a bowl of Xylitol out (read more here http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?c=3307&articleid=1447)
  • Heaters and access to open fires.
  • Medicines, poisons and household (kitchen) rubbish bins.
  • Household plants such as:
    •  Dieffenbachia
    • Its common household plant called, "dumb cane," this refers to the poisoning effect of raphides, which can cause temporary inability to speak; for this reason, it is also known as the mother-in-law's tongue. Read more https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieffenbachia
    • Azalea - Both the azalea's leaves and flowers are toxic to animals
    • Calla lily
      • When dogs or cats ingest calla lilies they may be found pawing at face, drooling, foaming, and vomiting.
    • Philodendron
  • Stairs
    • Block them off.
  • Windows, doors and gates
    • Keep them closed to prevent the puppy from wondering off.
