Our Story
“The first Italian Prisoners of War arrived in 1942, remaining here for the duration of the war. During this time they came into contact with the local farming community where they were employed as farm labourers, builders, chefs, gardeners, mechanics and various other tasks in Paarl , Worcester and Robertson area.
The friendships that they established with the South African Community was to be a very long and lasting one, many of them returning after the war ended taking up permanent residence in the country, visiting farms where they were employed, and the families they had met and lived with. Many of them became members of these families.”

Marco, a strapping lad and relatively well known athlete in Italy, arrived in Cape Town in 1942 as an Italian POW. An Accountant by trade he found himself allocated to work the vineyards of Ouboet Pieterse. Marco’s accounting skills were discovered during a skills survey that Ouboet did of the POW’s allocated to work his fields and he moved Marco into his office to work on his accounts.
Susan, Ouboets daughter took a shine to Marco who consistently but politely resisted flirtation as he intended to marry Aurora, back home, when the war was over.
Not being raised to take no for an answer Susan, set about winning the heart of Marco through the culinary excellence that she had gained from her Grandma. Before the end of the war Marco and Susan were wed and she set up shop on the farm making grape jams and tarts.  By 1957 Susan had established a wide range of preserves and baked treats that  Marco delivered in their own delivery vehicle. SFS Foods had become relatively famous by the time Marco wrote off their delivery vehicle which still stands in the fields on the farm.
Marco and Susan had a daughter Valentina who married Giovanni. Valentina and Giovanni had a daughter who was christened Sally and who married Luigi Lupi. Luigi was convinced that the internet would change the ways of the past and he set about specializing in customer relations. Luigi maintained that the way forward was to lock in the desires of the marketplace to a bank of kitchens that offered unfailing  taste and flavor in every dish whilst he ensured that deliveries exceeded expectations.
The strategy that Luigi devised proved to be a success and it forms the basis of what is SFS Foods today.
