Our Story

With over half a century of dedicated service to the pet boarding industry, Waterfall Kennels and the Stubbs family have played a key role in aligning the family business to meet the demands of an increasingly discerning clientele. Very conveniently located within close proximity to the Fourways hub, Waterfall Kennels and Cattery is uniquely positioned to offer your fur family unrivalled attention in a secure, warm and spotlessly clean environment where everyone involved lives on site. The Stubbs family has been actively involved in animal husbandry for generations, both as formidable equestrians and master kennelers.

Not only did Charlotte and David Stubbs formulate the instructor and stable management syllabus that is now internationally recognised and practised in every South African equestrian discipline, Waterfall kennels and the Stubbs family helped write the rule book and code of conduct for the original Pet Boarding Association.

Richard started training dogs under Lionel Wilson, the founder of our Guide Dog Association in South Africa. Realising that a market existed for the convenience of home training - where dogs could be schooled in their environment and on a personal ‘one on one’ basis, Richard went on to train hundreds of dogs of various types in several disciplines, often doing an exhausting eight hourly lessons per day in just about every Johannesburg suburb. This led to establishing weekend group classes and satellite training schools in Pretoria and White River, Mpumalanga.  Many of his talented pupils are featured in local and international film, stage and television, and he is one of very few South African animal trainers to have travelled professionally to apply his craft in foreign countries.  Richard can attest to having worked together with Des Kloegh of 'Jock of the Bushveld' fame and on the same set of Star Wars in Tunisia. He is also one of very few trainers whose star pupils must perform safely and obediently near horses, camels and elephants. Although Richard no longer holds weekend dog obedience and agility training classes, he is still active in helping others manage specific training and behavioural issues that require his specialised knowledge and experience.

Our Heritage

Since 1959, Waterfall Kennels Has Been Owned and managed By The Stubbs Family

A Brief History:
  • Founded in 1959 by well-known equestrians David & Charlotte Stubbs.
  • Initially situated near Khyber Rock in Woodmead, Charlotte bred rabbits for the restaurant market to cover start-up costs, which they did in conjunction with a pet shop and saddlery business located near Thrupps in Illovo.
  • The very first pet boarder was a Cocker Spaniel called Treasure, who was accommodated in an unused stable.
  • In about 1977, Jeremy & Dianna Stubbs took over the management of Waterfall Kennels when David and Charlotte moved to Whitehills Farm. The farm covered what is now Fourways Crossing, Builders Warehouse, Leaping Frog Shopping Centre and most of the surrounding residential developments.
  • When Waterfall Kennels relocated to its current site near Fourways in 1992, many of our existing customers were very hesitant to continue supporting us 'this far out of town and on such a bad gravel road'. How times change......
