Jobs: Be Prepared for Instability

Jobs:  Be Prepared for Instability

Unless you’re a celebrity who is working all of the time, the life of an entertainer can be very unstable in terms of employment.  It should not be minimized how difficult this can become at times, financially (and emotionally.)  Are you the type of person who thrives in a work environment and a financial situation that is stable and secure?  If you enjoy having a set-schedule, where there is little uncertainty about where your next job or paycheck is coming from, a career as an actor may be challenging for you.

Are you “good” with money, or do you need to learn a little bit more about it before quitting a full-time job in order to pursue an entertainment career? It is very difficult (if not impossible) to have a full-time job at the same time.  Auditions can come up at any time, and typically you’ll need to find a day-job that will allow you to have some flexibility in order to attend your auditions. Performers function in an atmosphere where they may go for long periods of time without being hired for work.  They may not have a consistent paycheck every week, and sometimes you can even go a long time without being sent on an audition through an agent.  (This is why it’s important to be your own agent).
