Boarded Training

Waterfall Kennels offers in-house boarded obedience training for all breed types under the guidance of owner Richard Stubbs.

This all-inclusive service is normally facilitated over a one month training period and is followed by a comprehensive demonstration of what learners have been taught whilst in our care. Richard guarantees his success in respect to the following disciplines; heel work, sit, down, stay and the come (recall) commands and customers are only billed on completion of the ‘one on one’ presentation.
To avoid any preconceived ideas as to what level of discipline is achievable in a kennel training situation, please be advised that there is a very distinct difference between basic obedience training and everyday disobedience issues that are commonly associated with most young dogs in terms of house training, destructive behaviour etc. although Richard will of course offer valuable advice in this regard and if necessary deal with behavioural problems on site in the dog’s own environment.

To enable owners to achieve similar results it is imperative that the owner becomes involved in the understanding and practical application of all the various commands immediately after the intensive boarded training has been completed, as it would be unreasonable for the inexperienced owner to expect their dog to perform in the same manner as has been demonstrated by that of a professional dog handler with more than 30 years’ hand-on experience. For this reason Richard encourages owners to return for private tuition to ensure that a similar level of success is attainable from both  dog and owner.

Any dog training establishment that offers a crash course over a limited period of ten to fourteen days is making an unrealistic promise. Obedient, well behaved dogs are the product of diligent, positive and repetitive reinforcement that serves to retain the individual temperament and character of the dog being trained. There is no quick fix that assures continued success or an approach to discipline which undermines confidence.

Unless a dog trainer is capable of making an immediate impression on the dog he is physically working with be very wary of the instructor who may sound extremely plausible but lacks the ability to demonstrate what he/she preaches. There is no substitute for experience no matter how well educated a trainer might sound on the learning of others. The approach one applies to an individual dog varies enormously - regardless of breed type or commonly held assumptions.

Richard started initially by working with many different breed varieties in a home setting and this invaluable background over many years has enabled him to gain an insight very few other trainers can lay claim to. Not only has Richard competed successfully with dogs that were not even his - but is the only person in South Africa to have trained dogs specifically for complicated routines in both commercial, international film and stage productions.
