Becker & Bekker Optometrists is well situated in the NHC Medical centres and is headed up by Kobus van Rooyen who has over 33 years experience in delivering expert eyecare and overall eye health. His father was a well respected Optometrist so the passion for helping others to see runs deep in the family.

Professional Services
We have a team of highly qualified Optometrists, in each of the NHC branches, who are able to conduct in-depth, comprehensive eye tests to evaluate your overall eye health and wellbeing. We use the latest optometry equipment coupled with extensive eye examination procedures that are designed to thoroughly investigate your individual eyes and eyesight capabilities. The important ingredients here are experience and time – your exam can't be rushed. There are no shortcuts to correctly and accurately identifying underlying problems which could affect your long-term vision and health.
What happens in an eye test?
Be prepared – please take any glasses that you currently wear as well the names of any medication that you are taking with you. You should also have your doctor's details available.
The eye examination normally includes a number of tests as follows:
Discuss the reason for your visit
It's important to begin with communication. Yes it may be a routine eye test but our optometrists still need toestablish an accurate baseline. For instance:
- You may be experiencing problems with your eyes and vision
- Your doctor may have recommended that you have your eyes tested
- You may have special requirements due to work, sport or a hobby
- The optometrist will enquire about your general health
- If anyone in your family has any existing eye condition or eye disease.
Evaluating your eye sight
Here you will be asked to read letters on a chart. This is to test your visual acuity or 20/20 vision. There are tests designed for those who can't read. Instead of reading letters these patients will identify pictures.
Examining your outer eye
This test uses a light that is used to evaluate the health of your eyes and how well they react to light.
Examining your inner eye
A device called an ophthalmoscope allows the optometrist to look into the eye to check the internal state of the eyes.
Inspecting your eye muscles
The muscles that control your eye movements will be tested to ensure that they are functioning efficiently.
Deciding whether you need glasses
These tests may indicate that you need glasses to improve your vision. You will need to look at letters and colours through a variety of lenses. Our optometrist will then determine precisely what your individual needs are and will formulate a prescription.
Results of your eye test
Our optometrists will go through your tests and will discuss the results and your eye health with you. You will be provided with a prescription for glasses or contact lenses suitable for your condition.
